Stephen Foster theme for Maintain Hope concert

December 27, 2017 0 Comments
A reminder that the Maintain Hope concert on 17 January will be an eclectic mix of music, song, story and dance, writes Maintain Hope founder Gerry O'Donoghue.

The Camptown Singers, a choral group formed specially for the concert, will create a musical insight into the life and times of the American composer Stephen Foster by visiting, through song, the world of the American South portrayed in Gone with the Wind. The group, under its musical director Monica Martin, consists of Christy and Madge McDonald, Robert and Maeve Jordan, Eileen Doyle, Gertrude Coffey, Philomena Breslin, Maurice O'Mahony, Gese Mucke, Margaret Talbot and the talented Kelly brothers.

Leah O'Sullivan on the harp will combine with the vocal talents of Eve McMahon to demonstrate the variety of emerging talent in the area.

Singer-songwriter Roy Thompson will include his own compositions in his programme.

Sean Leahy and friends will provide a lively session of Irish Music and dance.

The lineup will also include Noel O'Grady, a multi award-winning singer including five times winner of Oireachtas na Gaeilge competition for traditional singing.

Brian Byrne, who has become the Keeper of Memories for Kilcullen, will contribute a nostalgic piece, and Dick Dunphy and Bernard Berney are immersed in rehearsal for a specially commissioned comedy sketch.

A pair of tickets for this event would make an ideal Christmas present. They're available now from Berneys Chemists.

NAUSHAD-Once All of India was crazy about his Melodies.

December 25, 2017 0 Comments

Naushad(26 December 1919 – 5 May 2006 )began his career in 1940 with Prem Nagar, but took off in 1944 with Ratan, where he created his own style. All of India was crazy about him. His music had that simplicity. Songs like Jab dil hi toot gaya and Gham diye mustaqil from Shahjehan touch you.
He was one of the first to introduce sound mixing and the separate recording of voice and music tracks in playback singing. He was the first to combine the flute and the clarinet, the sitar and mandolin. He also introduced the accordion to Hindi film music and was among the first to concentrate on background music to extend characters' moods and dialogue through music.
He was the first composer to have developed the system of western notation in India. The notation for the music of the film 'Aan' was published in book form in London. He was the first to use a 100-piece orchestra.for Aan in 1952.

His greatest contribution was to bring Indian classical music into the film medium. Many of his compositions were inspired by ragas and he even used distinguished classical artistes like Amir Khan and D.V. Paluskar in Baiju Bawra (1952) and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan in Mughal-e-Azam (1960). Baiju Bawra (1952) demonstrated Naushad's grasp of classical music and his ability to bring it to the masses, for which he won the first Filmfare Best Music Director Award in 1954.

He was very innovative,iUran Khatola (1955), he recorded an entire song without the use of orchestra, having replaced the sound of musical instruments with choral sound of humming..For Mughal-e-Azam (1960) song Ae Mohabbat Zindabad, he used a chorus of 100 persons. He asked Lata Mangeshkar to render a part of the song "Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya" in a bathroom that had glazed tiles and then recorded the music to get the echo effect.
Naushad made Suraiya stand on a stool for the 12-year-old schoolgirl's voice to be able to reach the microphone on her debut, Boot karoon main paalish baaboo (from A R Kardar's Nai Duniya in 1942). It was under him, likewise, in another A R Kardar songathon, Dastan (1950), that Suraiya vocally peaked with Mohabbat badhakar jooda ho gaye.
This master composer first made both Mukesh (Andaz) and Talat Mahmood (Babul) sound surpassingly individualistic on Dilip Kumar He was, near clandestinely, getting Mohammed Rafi ready for the big leap. From his first Anmol Ghadi solo, Tera khilauna toota baalak (1946), to O door ke musafir on Dilip Kumar in Uran Khatola (1955), Rafi came a long, long way, once the Baiju Bawra (above) miracle happened in 1952..

His association with Mohammad Rafi had marked the most golden combination which galvanized the outstanding music composed during the golden age in Indian music, the 50s and 60s. His composition in the film Dulari, 1947, for Mohammad Rafi titled “suhani raat dhal chuki” makes a music lover addicted and it has an appeal even after 60 years of its composition.
Naushad’s composition in Son of India, “dil torneewale”, duet for Rafi and Lata, shows the effective use of instruments in that age when recording was not developed to that extent. In Dilip Kumar’s Kohinoor, 1960, Rafi’s songs “madhuban me radhika nachere”, “do sitaron ka zamee par hai Milan aaj ki raat” marks Naushad’s control over bhajans and songs with chorus effects. In Rajender Kumar’s Mere Mehboob, 1963, Naushad had explained the transformation of nasams into ghazals. His songs “mere mehboob tujhe meri mohabbat ki kasam”, “tumse izhaar-e-haal kar baithe”, “ai husn zara jag tujhe isq dikhaye” enchanted the listeners. Naushad’s compositions were as outstanding as Shakeel Badayani’s lyrics and Rafi’s golden voice.
Naushad had used folk songs to a great extent where the subjects in the films required them. For example in the film Ganga Jumna, 1961, his composition for Rafi including “nain lar jaihe” was created with bhojpuri effect, and Rafi had succeeded in pronouncing it in the manner expected from him. Rafi’s songs in Rajender Kumar’s Palki, Ganwar, composed by Naushad were also outstanding.
It is tragic that the film industry, could not utilise Naushad’s talent in 1970s and 80s,
He gave  35 silver jubilee hits, 12 golden jubilee and 3 diamond jubilee mega successes. Naushad was conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Bhushan in 1982 and 1992 respectively for his contribution to the Bollywood film industry.

The Christmas Celebration in Hindi Films

December 24, 2017 0 Comments

Merry Christmas to All

I Pick Those Rare Delightful Christian Characters, Which Brought A Smile To Our Lips.It is really very strange that the Christian Community Is Generally Depicted As The One High On Drinks And Parties. In contrast to that one character of kind-hearted but talkative landlady, Mrs. D'sa played by Lalita Pawar  from the 1959 film Anari comes to our mind.

Anthony Gonsalves of Amar Akbar Anthony played by Amitabh Bachchan The character became so popular that men began sporting the colourful vests and the metal cross worn by Bachchan in the film, irrespective of their religion.

Who can forget the Goan Christian fisherman father, Jack Braganza (Prem Nath) of Bobby 1973. His loud and affectionate nature and his joie-di-vivre made him an instant hit.

How can we forget the film Julie released in 1975.Based around an Anglo-Indian family, the film even had a full-fledged English song My heart is beating sung by Preeti Sagar. The film also dealt with religious prejudices that exist between communities..

There was a film Baaton baaton mein (1979) the film had the backdrop of a Christian home.Rosie Perreira (Pearl Padamsee)) is an anxious widow who wants her daughter Nancy (Tina Munium) to marry at the earliest. Tony Braganza (Amol Palekar) is introduced to her on the train as they commute to work.

Based on Erich Segal’s Love Story, ‘Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se’ had Sachin and Ranjeeta playing college students who fall in love but the latter succumbs to cancer in the end. Ranjeeta played a devoted Catholic girl, Lily Fernandes who stays with her mother and reforms Sachin. A film that became one of the sleeper hits of 1978.

Saeed Mirza’s ‘Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hai?’ revolved around Albert played brilliantly by Naseeruddin Shah who is a car mechanic and loses his temper now and then. Naseer’s portrayal as Albert, the typical Anglo Indian Christian got a lot of critical acclaim and is counted as one of his most memorable roles to date.

Remember the Commissioner D’Mello of Jane Bhi Do Yaron.Satish Shah played a corrupt commissioner who receives bribes to pass projects by builders. He happens to get murdered as he is towed and chased by all the characters in the film. Every scene is a treat.

Jennifer Pinto aka Jenny played by Katrina Kaif  in Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani is considered as one of her most memorable roles in her decade long career.  Ranbir Kapoor playing Prem who falls in love with a Christian girl - Jenny, but she loves someone else.

Christmas presents were taken, and a Text Alert has been issued. Anyone who observed anything suspicious in the area is asked to call Kilcullen or Naas Garda.

The Garda are also reminding everyone to be extra vigilant in their home security over the holiday season.

Walking In A Winter Wonder Land

December 24, 2017 0 Comments
Local auctioneer John Dowling, a keen mountaineer and hill walker, has had a long association with the Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team (DWMRT) and shares his tips for some post Christmas exercise.

Now that Christmas is finally here, the season of over indulging and excess, what better way than to shake of the cobwebs than with nice walk in the Wicklow hills. As we all know Kilcullen has so much going for it, but for me the location is hard to beat. We are so lucky that in just a comfortable 25-minute drive away, we can find ourselves at the foothill of the Wicklow mountains, which is just an outdoor paradise. I have spent many, many years walking in Wicklow and I still haven't explored it all yet. It's vast, it's beautiful and most importantly, it's free and on your doorstep.

Hill walking in Ireland has grown tremendously in popularity over the past few years as the Irish have become more health conscious and are generally more engaged in outdoor pursuits. The most important factor about hill walking is that it has something to offer all, both young and old, from beginners to advanced. Whats more, the cost is relatively cheap, once you have a good pair of waterproof boots, waterproof clothing and a backpack. Over the years, my association with the rescue team has hopefully positioned me to share some little tips that might be helpful to get you started.

Hill walking can obviously be done alone but it is also a very social sport and can be a great place to meet like minded people. One of the best pieces of advice is to join a local walking club which will offer you an organised group walk which will give you confidence if you are new to the hills and also a great place to share information on equipment. Some clubs will arrange map-and-compass reading classes which are an integral part of hill walking, but this is the advantage of joining a club as if maps and compasses are not your strong point you can be guaranteed that your group leader will be. There are a few local clubs and you can check out the link www.mountaineering.ie which will show you some local clubs and no doubt a Facebook search will find even more.

From working with the rescue team in the past, I can safely say that what keeps the team busiest, is people underestimating the terrain and weather. As I said, Wicklow can be beautiful one minute, until the weather arrives in and then presents a different dilemma. Make sure you always tell someone the location you are going walking in and a rough time of when you will be back. Although the mountain area is not known for the best mobile phone signal, always make sure you have your mobile powered up as it will no doubt come in handy if something goes wrong. Always check the weather forecast before you leave the house. In this day and age we are blessed with a large amount of up-to-date and accurate weather forecasting to which we all have access. Two good accurate sites are accuweather.com and met.ie

Overall hill walking is a relatively cheap sport to get involved in but I do recommend that when you are buying equipment, that you buy the best that you can afford. Believe me when I say there are some serious differences in waterproof clothing and boots and this can mean the difference in you enjoying or not enjoying your days of hill walking. Try to get Gore-Tex boots and waterproofs as the brand has been the tried and tested market leader for many years now. Not cheap, but when you look after your equipment you should get many happy years wear from them. A good comfortable backpack is also important and make sure you take your time trying these on as it will be sitting on your back for a good few hours, weighed down with gear, so the cheaper option will not be your friend here. Once you catch the hill walking bug, Christmas will become a very pleasant time of year for loved ones that may normally struggle thinking of a present to buy you, but this will change for them as there is always something new to purchase, including torches, gloves, flasks, walking sticks and hand-held GPS systems. The list is endless.

My Christmas recommendation to all, is a trip to Glendalough where youll find a wonderful selection of safe and fully marked walks which caters to all walking levels from beginners to advance. Even the drive there from Kilcullen over the Wicklow Gap from Hollywood is very special and is worth the trip alone. You can check out www.glendalough.ie before you go where you can print off maps and walking guides.

I hope to see some local faces over the Christmas on the hills and I can guarantee you that this time of year is without doubt the nicest time to be up there. Enjoy your walking and be safe and if you do get into trouble, remember to call mountain rescue on 112 or 999 and they will be happy to assist. DWMRT.ie is a voluntary service and you can check out www.dwmrt.ie for more information on the team.
