YASH CHOPRA-The man who introduced the lush green meadows, snow-capped Alps, pristine lakes of Switzerland to Bollywood

September 26, 2017 0 Comments

Today on his 85th Birth Anniversary how can we forget his love for Switzerland. Its a known fact that Yash Chopra loved to shoot his films in Switzerland, and is credited for highlighting the beauty of the country to Indians. He chose Switzerland as his honeymoon destination and toured the country with his wife Pamela in 1970. Mesmerized by the landscape he decided to introduce Switzerland through his films, he turned to Switzerland regularly for his movies which he produced under his banner Yash Raj Films.Since the 1980's, many film directors have chosen Switzerland. And none managed it more (and better) than Yash Chopra.

Switzerland and its snow-capped mountains were first showcased in Indian cinema through Raj Kapoor's Sangam in 1964.After that  few scenes were shot in Switzerland in An Evening in Paris  (1967). Dev Anand followed the trend. He shot several scenes and a famous song inside Switzerland.in his first directorial film Prem Pujari in 1970.
Hundreds of Indian movies have been shot to this date, but the 1995 hit Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge(produced by Yash Chopra) happens to be the most famous movie shot in Switzerland.Since then, there has been a steady flow of Indian tourists visiting Switzerland. And for those who also happen to be cinema fanatics, Bollywood packaged trips to places like Gstaad are arranged.
Switzerland Govt. honored the role of Yash ji to promote Tourism in Switzerland among the Indians. A beautiful lake, where he shot many movies, is famously known as Chopra Lake.  He was felicitated with the honorary Swiss Ambassador Award by the Embassy of Switzerland and honored with the title “Amabssador of  Interlaken”,  his favorite town in Switzerland. A train named after Yash Chopra was also launched in Jungfrau Railways in Switzerland.
The shooting locations of DDLJ are now become Indian tourist location.  “Jara Sa Jhoom Loo Main” song was shot in the town of Gstaad. You can also see famous Candy store “Early Beck” in the song.
Song from Dil Wale Dulhania Le Jayenge 1995

…In the song “Mere Khwabon Me Jo Aaye”, Shah Rukh Khan is running behind a plane. That scene was shot at Sannen Airport.

…The railway station where Kajol misses her train was shot at the Zweisimmen Railway Station, while When they finally make peace, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol wait at the railway station in Saanen for the next train to Zurich.

…The scene, in which SRK apologies to Kajol was shot in the town of Interlaken.

....During the climax scene of the Dhoom 3 movie, Sahir jumps off the Verzasca Dam in Ticino Switzerland. An interesting information here is that the opening scene of the 1995 James Bond film 'Golden Eye' featured Bond jumping off this dam.

Raj plays the DDLJ tune to a group of people on the streets of Gstaad.  Bachna Ae Haseeno  They join in with their music as well. Mahi hears this and is romantically drawn to the site where she sees Raj for the first time and 'falls' in love.

Yashji's first films were made under the BR Films banner. Dhool ka Phool (1959) Yashji's second film, Dharamputra(1961).Encouraged by the success of both films, the Chopra brothers made several more movies together during the late fifties and sixties. Chopra rose to prominence after his commercially and critically successful drama, Waqt (1965).In 1971, Chopra founded his own production company, Yash Raj Films, and launched it with Daag (1973),His success continued in the seventies, with some of Indian cinema's most successful and iconic films, including the action thriller Deewar (1975), which established Amitabh Bachchan as the leading actor in Bollywood; the romantic drama Kabhie Kabhie (1976) and Trishul(1978).The 1980s was a lean phase in Yash ji's life most of his films didn't do well in Box Office in spite of Kala Pathar and Silsila.
In 1989, Chopra directed the commercially and critically successful cult film Chandni, which became instrumental in ending the era of violent films in Bollywood and returning to musicals. He made Lamhe in 1991 which was critically acclaimed but was not successful.Chopra directed three more romantic films, all starring Khan; Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Veer-Zaara (2004) and Jab Tak Hai Jaan(2012), before he announced his retirement from directing in 2012.His last film Jab Tak Hai Jaan was also shot in Switzerland
Yash.Chopra, who captured the breath taking locales of Switzerland in his films for decades, was given this prestigious honour by the Swiss government. A sculpture made of pure bronze, and weighing about 350 kilos, shows Yash Chopra in his iconic pose with the camera by his side.
               SONGS SHOT IN FOREIGN LOCATION
Yash Chopra shot the evergreen 'Dekha ek khwab....' song from his 1981 film 'Silsila' in Netherlands, and his film 'Faasle' (1985), in Switzerland. He kept coming back later for films like 'Chandni' (1989), 'Mohabbatein' (2000), 'Veer Zaara' (2004) but it was the iconic 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' in 1995, which popularised Europe as a staple destination for Bollywood romances.

The 1989 blockbuster Chandni had made headlines because of Sridevi’s costumes. But the scenic beauty of Switzerland in the scenes can not be missed. The iconic lake Alpenrausch was one of the few locations of the shoot.

The role of the Director in Song Composition

August 28, 2017 0 Comments

Songs are integral part of a Bollywood film.Generally a song is ready before a film being shot.It is the Director who has seen the film in his imagination. The Music director and Lyricist fully depend on the Director to tell them about the film and the situation of the song.what kind of music and lyrics he wants for the situation. This process has a lot of discussion with the Director,Composer and lyricist to prepare a song. This planning is called in film term"sitting".There may be many sittings between the director and composer, some Producers also take part in these sittings.
These sittings may continue for as long a year.It depends on the Director.Director Yash Chopra took one year to finalize the songs of Dil To Pagal Hai.For Mohabattein (2000) Aditya Chopra took 6 to 8 months for the songs composed by Jatin Lalit. In an interview somewhere the Producer Director Prakash Jha said for him it usually take 5 to 6 sittings for a song.
For the composer to create a song he and his Lyricist need Complete information from the Director about the situation and the character. The amount of details vary from Composer to composer. The great Music composer S D Burman used to get minor to minor details from the director of the film, once he understood the situation and prepared the song he will not allow the director for any change. It is said that his knowledge of the cinema was such that he used to advise the Producer and Director about the filming of the song.
As per Jatin Lalit the present day Directors Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar give immense detail for their song situation. After viewing the situation as per their director they start working on the song. There are many Directors who do not give sufficient information even they do not imagine about the song, director just relies on the composer and choreographers. As per Shravan of Nadeem Sharvan composer duo, being music composer, they have some visuals in their mind,so according the situation they create the music,.the director and producer shoot the song with slight modification. This is evident from Producer Director Anil Sharma, the Gadar  film fame said that he tells the story to his Music Composer tells about the situation, what he wants in the song.give him the example of certain songs, similar to that song you make for me.
I think the film music depends on the Director's attitude towards the music. There were many great  Directors who along with his Music composers gave us great music, many immortal songs. Many music directors admit that they were able to give better  work working with the particular director.Take the case of RK Banner,Navketan or Guru Dutt, they gave us many immortal songs. As far as picurisation of a song no one can beat Dev Anand or Raj Kapoor. Both of them had a knack of good music.
On the one hand the director inspires the music composer for great music,on the other hand many composers did not like interference by their Director. The great composers Naushad and S D Burman didn't want any interference once they heard the story and understood the situation. There used to be a rapport  with the Director or a banner with the composer resulted to hit music one after another. Most of the big Directors or banners had a fixed team of Music Directors and Singer.
In  the end I would  say that everything depends on the Director. That's the how good directors have extracted a good music even out of the less talented music composers.
Here is my list of Best Picturised Songs of Golden Era

GULZAR-The Legend Who Knows How To Weave Magic Through His Words

August 18, 2017 0 Comments

On the 83rd Birthday of Gulzar(18th Aug 1934 Born at Dina, Pakistan ),I look at the the songs and poetry he writes. His film journey started as a song writer with BANDINI(1963) with the famous song of Lata"Mora Gora Ang Layle"He is relevant even today. His songs are for every mood, and every occasion. He has hovered around in the background while you were at the nearest nightclub (Dhan Te Nan) or at the crossroads, worrying about your place in the big city (Ek Akela Is Shahar Mein...). He has helped you survive heartbreak (Mera Kuch Saamaan) and celebrate love (Aaj Kal Paon Zameen Par).
He is a magician of words,he presents a different side to every emotion, and brought new meaning to every situation. He can say very convoluted things in simple words and can make simple inscrutable. It's up to you, what you like.

Song from Khamoshi, 1969

.His lyrics however did not gain much attention until the 1969's Khamoshi, where his song "Humne Dekhi Hai Un Aankhon Ki Mehekti Khushboo" became popular. The song for the film Guddi(1971 )  "Humko Man Ki Shakti Dena" was a prayer which is still sung in many schools in India. His song "Jai Ho" from Slumdog Millionaire(2008) brought him the Oscar Award. The song received international acclaim and won him a Grammy Award (shared with Rahman) in the category of Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.

He never chased the spotlight; it was the other way around. Interestingly, the enigma of this 83-year-old poet-director is more or less intact. Gulzar’s respect among his fans is something that makes them overlook his cynicism. He is unique in bollywood. There’s no poetry on the silver screen of Hindi cinema like Gulzar’s
Song from Bandini 1963
.
Remember the song Mera kuchh saamaan tumhaare paas pada hai, from Ijaazat sung by Asha Bhosle,The song recalls the bitter-sweet moments the lovers shared: 116 moonlit nights, surviving a rainy walk under a single umbrella, complaints and promises, and a night wrapped in a letter I doubt there are many who haven’t lived what is described here, who haven’t remembered these described moments long after they’re dead, and who haven’t cried a little in memory.
Song from Ishqiya 2010

Ek Akela Is Shahar Mein -the song from Gharonda (1977) sung by Bhupinder is another gem from Gulzar

Song from Maachis 1996

Nazar Mei Rehte Ho from Aman Ki Asha

The journey that started with Mera gora rang lei le (Bandini, 1963) continues in all its glory, and in all possibility Gulzar’s repertoire is not yet short of deadly creations. Yes, we miss the director of timeless films such as Mere Apne, Koshish, Parichay, Mausam, Aandhi, Kitaab, Lekin, Ijazat and Maachis, but it’s fine as long as his pen is producing mesmerising songs.
Gulzar also wrote poetry, dialogues and scripts. He was awarded Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in India, the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award — the highest award in Indian cinema. He has won several Indian National Film Awards, 20 Filmfare Awards, one Academy Award and one Grammy Award.
