The Christmas Celebration in Hindi Films

December 24, 2017 0 Comments

Merry Christmas to All

I Pick Those Rare Delightful Christian Characters, Which Brought A Smile To Our Lips.It is really very strange that the Christian Community Is Generally Depicted As The One High On Drinks And Parties. In contrast to that one character of kind-hearted but talkative landlady, Mrs. D'sa played by Lalita Pawar  from the 1959 film Anari comes to our mind.

Anthony Gonsalves of Amar Akbar Anthony played by Amitabh Bachchan The character became so popular that men began sporting the colourful vests and the metal cross worn by Bachchan in the film, irrespective of their religion.

Who can forget the Goan Christian fisherman father, Jack Braganza (Prem Nath) of Bobby 1973. His loud and affectionate nature and his joie-di-vivre made him an instant hit.

How can we forget the film Julie released in 1975.Based around an Anglo-Indian family, the film even had a full-fledged English song My heart is beating sung by Preeti Sagar. The film also dealt with religious prejudices that exist between communities..

There was a film Baaton baaton mein (1979) the film had the backdrop of a Christian home.Rosie Perreira (Pearl Padamsee)) is an anxious widow who wants her daughter Nancy (Tina Munium) to marry at the earliest. Tony Braganza (Amol Palekar) is introduced to her on the train as they commute to work.

Based on Erich Segal’s Love Story, ‘Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se’ had Sachin and Ranjeeta playing college students who fall in love but the latter succumbs to cancer in the end. Ranjeeta played a devoted Catholic girl, Lily Fernandes who stays with her mother and reforms Sachin. A film that became one of the sleeper hits of 1978.

Saeed Mirza’s ‘Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hai?’ revolved around Albert played brilliantly by Naseeruddin Shah who is a car mechanic and loses his temper now and then. Naseer’s portrayal as Albert, the typical Anglo Indian Christian got a lot of critical acclaim and is counted as one of his most memorable roles to date.

Remember the Commissioner D’Mello of Jane Bhi Do Yaron.Satish Shah played a corrupt commissioner who receives bribes to pass projects by builders. He happens to get murdered as he is towed and chased by all the characters in the film. Every scene is a treat.

Jennifer Pinto aka Jenny played by Katrina Kaif  in Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani is considered as one of her most memorable roles in her decade long career.  Ranbir Kapoor playing Prem who falls in love with a Christian girl - Jenny, but she loves someone else.

50 Years of RAM AUR SHYAM

December 14, 2017 0 Comments

Exactly today Ram Aur Shyam turns 50.the film was released on 15th Dec 1967.Ram Aur Shyam was the remake of the popular Telugu film Ramudu Bheemudu, which in turn was loosely based on Alexander Dumas’s The Corsican Brothers. The film was a super hit.
The success of Ram aur Shyam, directed by Tapi Chanakya, must be credited to two great actors – Dilip Kumar and Pran. The music by Naushad, with lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni, adds to the movie’s charm. One of the best songs is Aaj Ki Raat Mere Dil Ki Salaami Le Le, in which Shyam bids farewell to Rehman before abandoning his fake identity as Ram.
Dilip Kumar played Double Role in this film.He got Best Actor award by Filmfare for this film.
He is both Ram, the timid and seemingly mentally-retarded son of a millionaire industrialist, and Shyam, a sturdy yeoman brawler with an appetite like that of the legendary Bhima of the Mahabharata.

Ram isn’t really retarded, just terrorized by his sadistic, whip-wielding brother-in-law, Gajendra (Pran, of course), who, goaded by an evil mother, keeps Ram, along with his own wife and daughter, virtual prisoners in their palatial mansion.
Shyam is strong, brave and mischievous,he is  Ram's long lost twin brother Shyam (Dilip Kumar) lives in a village with his adopted mother Ganga whom he believes to be his birth mother. No one other than Ganga knows the truth about the twin brothers. He escapes to the city, after a mischievous conflict with Ganga, and meets Anjana, who is impressed by his personality. Anjana and her father confuse Shyam with Ram. Ram meets Shanta who thinks he is Shyam and takes him forcefully to his mother. Ram and Shanta develop feelings for each other. Meanwhile, Shyam decides to take the place of Ram to face Gajendra.
The scenes of Dilip Kumar as the flamboyant Shyam are in sharp contrast to those of the timid Ram, who is so terrified of Gajendra that he dare not look him in the eye. The thespian’s bonhomie with his co-stars Waheeda Rehman and Mumtaz is apparent, leading to relaxed and memorable performances from all concerned.
Only a truly fine actor like Dilip Kumar could have done pulled off the double act so convincingly, making Ram Aur Shyam a lasting treat for Hindi film buffs.

A Tribute to Dada Muni on his 16th Death Anniversary

December 09, 2017 0 Comments

An actor who could capture all your attention in a single shot, a man who added glamour to Hindi film fraternity and promoted talents from all corners of the country, Ashok Kumar has ruled the silver screen and melted millions of hearts with his charismatic screen appearance and personality. He was the first superstar of Hindi cinema as well as the first lead actor to play an anti-hero. He also became the first star to reinvent himself, enjoying a long and hugely successful career as a character actor.

He never ever wanted to become an actor. He came to Bombay to become a director. Those days, actors were really looked down upon. They were believed to come from the lowest strata of society. So he joined Bombay Talkies as a technician. he worked in the camera department. Later, he was made a lab assistant." It was sheer fluke that he became an actor.
He got the lead role in Jeevan Naiya (1936), a Bombay Talkies production. His first big hit was Achhut Kanya (1936), where he again paired with Devika Rani. The film was about a Brahmin boy falling in love with a girl from the 'untouchable' class.
He  was the first anti-hero of Indian cinema. Gyan Mukherjee's Kismet (1943) presented Ashok as a pickpocket who falls in love. This was the first film in Indian cinema that grossed at one crore rupees. So technically, Ashok Kumar was the one to set up the 'crore club'.
His rise to fame however rattled his parents. In an interview he said "My mother was certain that since I'd joined films, I would fall into bad ways. So without letting me know, she arranged my marriage. I didn't even see my wife before the wedding. Meeting your bride before marriage wasn't the done thing then".
Post Kismet, Ashok Kumar became the most bankable star of the era, delivering a succession of box office successes with movies like Chal Chal Re Naujawan (1944), Shikari (1946), Sajan (1947), Mahal (1949), Sangram (1950) and Samadhi (1950).
He produced several films for Bombay Talkies during the final years of the company including Ziddi (1948), which established the careers of Dev Anand and Pran,Later on he quit the Bombay Talkies and started Filmistan Studio with Shashdhar Mukharjee ,his desire to return to Bomaby Talkies was always there." He re bought Bombay Talkies in 1947. "Devika Rani had left by then. But the Talkies had fallen on bad days. The debts amounted to Rs 28 lakhs. We made movies like Majboor, Ziddi, Mahal and Mashal to repay the debts."
With the advent of the 1950s Ashok Kumar switched over to more mature roles, with the exception of the 1958 classic Howrah Bridge. Despite the arrival of a younger crop of stars like Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor, Ashok Kumar remained one of the stars of the era with hits like Afsana (1951), Nau Bahar (1952), Parineeta (1953), Bandish (1955) and EK Hi Raasta (1956). His most successful film of that era was Deedar (1951), in which he played second fiddle to Dilip Kumar.

Ashok Kumar played an important role in several landmark movies in the 1960s and 1970s, including Jewel Thief (1967), Aashirwad (1968) (for which he won a Filmfare Award as well as National Award in 1969), Purab aur Pashchim (1970), Pakeezah (1972), Mili (1975), Chhoti Si Baat (1975) and Khoobsurat (1980).
Ashok Kumar's last film role was in the 1997 movie Aankhon Mein Tum Ho.

. Altogether, he starred in over 275 films. He has done more than 30 Bengali dramas in Dhakuria. He was honored in 1988 with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest national award for cinema artists, by the Government of India and also received the Padma Bhushan in 1999 for his contributions to Indian cinema.
He died at the age of 90 in Mumbai on 10 December 2001 of heart failure at his residence in Chembur. The then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee described him as "an inspiration... for many generations of aspiring actors.

Today Western music rules youngsters' playlists but there are many youngsters who like to listen Ghazals. When we talk of Ghazals in today's scenario only one name appears in our mind that is the Legendary  Ghazal singer Ghulam Ali.
On his 77th Birthday I write this blog about his association with Bollywood.Though, he has hardly lent his voice to Bollywood, the few of his Ghazals that made it to the big screen have remained Indian audiences’ all time favorite.
Ghulam Ali was born on 5th Dec 1940 , at village Kaleke, district Sialkot, which is now a part of Pakistan. He belongs to a musical family, his father was vocalist and sarangi player who trained him earlier, he also learnt from Bade Ghulam Ali Khan's brother Ustad Barkat Ali Khan who is another great singer.
Owing to his immense popularity, some of his ghazals have been used in the Indian Hindi movies. His popular ghazal "Chupke chupke raat din.." has been used in the movie Nikaah featuring Raj Babbar and Salma Aghaa. Moreover, many of the Hindi film songs have been "inspired" from some of his ghazals. "Thodi si jo pi li hain, chori to nahi ki hain" from Namak Halal (Ghazal - Hungama hain kyon barpa) as you would recognize, is one them.
The first time his Ghazal(a small part in the background ) was taken in Hindi film Chhoti Si Baat in 1975,but his ghazals became popular among Hindi film goers from 1982 film Nikaah. In 1984 again in Maati Mange khoon his Ghazal was being played in background. He was associated with Aawargi(1990),Beti No 1 (2000),Bewafaa (2005) and very recently with Ghar Wapsi.
In Ghar Wapsi, he has also contributed to song Apni Mitti Ki Khushboo Hain Rago Mein Yeh Basi Hai…Choomenge Isko Shaan Se. Humko Toh Pyaara Hain Yeh Watan, Apni Jaan Se.

MOTILAL-The Natural Actor

December 03, 2017 0 Comments

A Tribute to Moti Lal on his 107th Birth Anniversary
Moti Lal deserves to be re-introduced to the present generation of film goers. He  should to be studied in acting schools because he is one of the all-time greats of Indian cinema. He was a natural actor.Watching his film one never felt he was acting. He was the Chunni Babu of Bimal Roy's Devdas.Perhaps his finest and most underfeted performance came in the title role of Mr Sampat (1952)
He was born in Shimla on 4th Dec 1910.He  starred in over 60 films, with at least 30 in the lead.He was a character actor and also played villainy roles in Anari and Paigham (1959).He received  Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for Devdas (1955) and Parakh (1960).He also directed the film Chhoti Chhoti Baatein (1965), but died before its release.
Motilal came from a distinguished family from Delhi.[7] His father was a renowned educationist, who died when Motilal was one year old.,he did his schooling in Shimla and later graduated from Delhi.University.
After leaving college, Moti Lal came to Bombay to join the Navy but destiny wanted him to become actor. In 1934 (aged 24), he was offered the hero's role in Shaher Ka Jadoo (1934) by the Sagar Film Company. He later featured in several successful social dramas alongside Sabita Devi, including Dr. Madhurika(1935) and Kulvadhu (1937). He worked with Mehboob Khan in Jagirdar (1937) and Hum Tum Aur Woh (1938) under the Sagar Movietone banner, in Taqdeer (1943) for Mehboob Productions, and Kidar Sharma's Armaan (1942) and Kaliyan (1944). He also acted in S. S. Vasan's film Paigham (1959) (Gemini Studios), and Raj Kapoor's Jagte Raho (1956).
Motilal had a glorious record as filmdom’s smartest hero. For over two decades, he reigned supreme over the hearts of swooning fans. At the age of 55, cinema had to bid farewell to its most dapper hero. Motilal had a passion for horse-racing. He used to have a horse called Traitor, because the animal had the nasty habit of looking back at Motilal exactly at the time of reaching the winning post and losing the race in the effort!  In 1965, Motilal breathed his last.  He died penniless.

The Great Classical Vocalists in Hindi Films

November 27, 2017 0 Comments

Among all genres, Hindustani classical music has had arguably the greatest impact on Hindi film music. Thousand of songs have been composed based on Hindustani ragas. There are some such songs those were sung by the Great Classical vocalists in Hindi films other than our great playback singers.
Great Hindustani vocalists, right from Pandit D V Paluskar to Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Ustad Amir Khan,Pt Bhimsen Joshi,Kishori Amonkar,Pt Jasraj, Nirmala Devi have lent their voice to the Hindi films occasionally.
Some of these songs  are  Aaj gawat man mero in Baiju Bawra by Pt D V Paluskar and Ustad Amir Khan;  jhanak jhanak payal baje by Ustad Amir Khan from the movie Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje, the title song in Geet Gaya Pathoron Ne, sung by Kishori Amonkar; and Humein Tumse pyaar kitna in Kudrat sung by Begum Parveen Sultana are known to one and all. A few others–such as prem jogan banke by Ustad bade Ghulam Ali Khan from Mughal-E-Azam and Ketaki Ghulab Juhi by Pt Bhimsen Joshi in Basant Bahar–are well-known .
Though these songs were not hit or popular among masses but they are precious gems. The trend of Classical Songs has diminished in our films but still there are some Music Directors who take the services of Hindustani Classical Vocalists. Vishal Bhardwaj in Maachis  composed a song with  Sanjeev Abhyankar. In this blog I have taken the songs sung by these great Classical singers.

Geeta Dutt- One of the greatest singers of the 20th Century.

November 22, 2017 0 Comments

Geeta Dutt born on 23rd Nov 1930 had a brief span of life. Her music career extended over a period of just 15 years. She appeared on the world of film music in 1947 and with her very first song “Mera sundar sapna beet gaya” she attained unprecedented fame and popularity winning the hearts of millions of music lovers. It was S D Burman who discovered and groomed her.
She rendered songs from her heart making them so endearingly heart rendering. When she sang "Thandi Hawaa Kaali Ghata" you can feel the cool breeze of an overcast day. When she sang "Koi Door Se Awaaz De" you can sense the feelings of a hauntingly disturbed soul celebrating the resplendence of life on one side and yet lamenting setbacks on the other. As critic Subhash K. Jha puts it aptly "Geta Dutt's voice conveys the sweetness of honey and the pain of the bee sting."
Here are my 10 favorite songs of GeetaDutt.

Folk Dances in Bollywood

November 16, 2017 0 Comments

We are seeing a controversy in the latest film PADMAVATI,another controversy has emerged about the Ghoomar Dance by Deepika Padukone. In this context I think that Films are more of imagination than the reality,we should see films in that manner and appreciate its creativity.
Bollywood dance is a difficult topic to discuss. It is a mixture of numerous styles. No folk dance shown in films is exactly the same but it has many steps from other folks also.Films before 1960 tended to draw heavily on classical and folk dance.  Since neither "classical dance" nor "folk dance" are homogenous entities. In this blog I have selected some popular folk dances of Bollywood.
The common  folk dances are Bhangra, Rajasthani Folk, Garba, Dandiya, Bihu Lavani etc shown in our films. There are many hit songs and dances in bollywood are worth mentioning.

Amazing Facts About Bollywood

November 10, 2017 0 Comments

Before Bollywood came the term "Tollywood".The name that was used to refer to the cinema of West Bengal. Dating back to 1932, "Tollywood" was the earliest Hollywood-inspired name, referring to the Bengali film industry based in Tollygunge, Calcutta.
The term "Bollywood" itself has origins in the 1970s, when India overtook America as the world's largest film producer. Credit for the term has been claimed by several different people, including the lyricist, filmmaker and scholar Amit Khanna, and the journalist Bevinda Collaco.

Here's a shocking fact--Bollywood was born 11 years before Hollywood! Bollywood’s first production was an 1899 short film, whereas Hollywood’s first film came out in 1910.

Initially the cinema industry was still considered a low profession in the 40s, music director Naushad was introduced by his parents to his bride as a tailor. And ironically, the music that played in his ‘baraat’ was from ‘Rattan’ (1944) – that had been composed by him.

We all Know that Colour era in Indian Cinema (Hindi and Tamil) started in the mid 1950s but Kisan Kanya (year 1937) was known as India's first colour film, before that attempts to shoot the first Indian colour film(1933) failed when the negative for Sairhandri, directed by Rajaram Vankudre Shantaram, was ruined during processing in Germany. The colour era started  with Aan(1953), a Dilip Kumar- Nimmi starrer by Mehboob Khan, was the first Indian film, the prints of which were in Technicolor, the most expensive colour format of that era, or ever. It was shot in 16 mm and later blown up to 35 mm. It was a landmark success.

The masala film was pioneered in the early 1970s by filmmaker Nasir Hussain, along with screenwriter duo Salim-Javed, consisting of Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. Yaadon Ki Baarat (1973), directed by Hussain and written by Salim-Javed, has been identified as the first masala film and the "first" quintessentially "Bollywood" film.Masala films launched Amitabh Bachchan into the biggest Bollywood movie star of the 1970s and 1980s. The "Curry Western" trend that began with Sholay (1975), written by Salim-Javed, also falls under the masala film genre.

Bollywood films are mostly musicals and are expected to contain catchy music in the form of song-and-dance numbers woven into the script. Indrasabha released in 1932 has world record for maximum no of songs. It has over 70 songs.

Raja Harishchandra (1913), by Dadasaheb Phalke, is known as the first silent feature film made in India.

The first kissing scene in Bollywood was shot 84 years back and it was in the film Karma. Today, actor Emraan Hashmi is considered as the kiss symbol of Bollywood.Karma was released in 1933 and Bollywood actors Himanshu Rai and Devika Rani had shot the first kissing scene in front of the camera. The 4-minute long kissing scene was not part of any romantic scene or lovemaking scene but the heroine was trying to recover hero from unconsciousness by kissing him.

Today Sequel in Bollywood are very common but Hunter Wali film series was the movie series to have a sequel. First movie was released in 1935 and its sequel in 1943.This was an action movie with Fearless Nadia as lead role. This movie is one of the earliest female-lead movies.
