Silliot Hill arrangements for Christmas

December 16, 2017 0 Comments
The Christmas arrangements at the Silliot Hill Recycling Centre have the facility closed on 24-26 December and 31 December-1 January, writes Brian Byrne.

On all other days through the Christmas season the Centre will be open from 8.45am-3pm.

Kildare County Council asks everybody to recycle all glass bottles, jars and drink cans at the nearest recycling bank (in Kilcullen at Leinster Marts Car Park, by kind courtesy of the Mart).

Please remember not to leave any boxes or bags at these sites and if the banks are full, do not leave any glass or cans around the banks. The Council will be working to maintain these sites over the Christmas period. To report banks that are full, or to report any littering incidents, call the FREEPHONE Litter Line on 1850 243 143.

Please note that the Silliot Hill facility will NOT be taking in Christmas trees for recycling after the festive season. The nearest locations for trees recycling will be Fair Green, Naas, and the Council Nursery at Naas Road, Newbridge, from Friday 5 January to Saturday 20 January.

Cllr seeks 'nice toilets'

December 11, 2017 0 Comments
Local councillor Ivan Keatley is on the hunt for a way to provide more public toilet facilities in Kildare, writes Brian Byrne. But without the Council having to build and maintain them.

His model is one that works in Germany and does so very well. It's called the Nette Toilette (Nice Toilet) scheme, and involves the local authorities paying businesses like hotels and pubs a fee to allow their facilities be used by the general public, not just their customers.

The scheme was launched in 2000 and now more than 200 cities in Germany and Switzerland are using the scheme.

The fee involved there ranges from 30-100 a month to the businesses, depending on size. In return, they display a provided sign on the outside of their premises which indicates to people that they have facilities available.

The scheme means people caught short don't have to suffer the embarrassment of pretending to be a customer, or don't have to buy anything, to be able to use the toilets.

The idea makes a lot of sense for local authorities, as they don't have to invest big capital in building facilities that then need a lot of maintenance.

As an example, the city of Bremen estimates that a network which would have cost it 1.1m to provide is available for the fees totalling 150,000 a year.

Cllr Keatley recently raised the matter by way of motion to the Council, seeking a scheme similar to the 'shop front renovation scheme' to fund the idea. The officials raised concerns of how it might be policed, and generally were cool to the idea.

But Cllr Keatley says he will push the matter on, and plans to specifically use the Nette Toilette scheme as a proposed model.

Councillor welcomes affordable housing moves

December 05, 2017 0 Comments
News that Kildare County Council will meet with the O Cualann Cohousing Alliance in coming weeks has been welcomed by Cllr Mark Wall, writes Brian Byrne.

The Alliance's model of cooperative affordable housing, which is in train in Poppintree in Dublin, was the subject of a public meeting in Kilcullen recently.

Cllr Wall, speaking about his motion at Council on the urgent need for affordable housing initiatives in the county, noted that there are banks of Council land 'almost in every village and town in the county'.

"In the absence of a national affordable housing scheme, we must look at other models," he said, adding that he had received a presentation on the O Cualann project which is providing homes to members at prices 30pc below the current market levels.

"Because of the low qualifying limits for Housing Assisted Payments or Social Housing in the region,to a maximum income of 36,000, many individuals and couples cannot get onto the social housing ladder. Instead they face growing private rental charges that are spiralling out of their reach."

Cllr Wall said the O Cualann model could provide for those who are working but find the growing majority of their income is spent on a house that they will never own. He said he will support any new schemes that want to begin building new communities in the county.

Of these, 246 are for 1-bed units, 222 for 2-beds, 136 for 3-bed homes, and 8 for 4-bed units.

A Council official confirmed to the Diary that the figures represent the number of applications on file for social housing support in Kilcullen.

The matter was discussed at the most recent meeting of KCA, where it was noted that the documents lodged with the planning application are extensive and will take time to go through.

The application is one of two currently in train by the company, the other relating to its site at Ballysaxhills.

Plans for parking, market square entrance

November 22, 2017 0 Comments
Kildare County Council is to contact business owners in Kilcullen's Lower Main Street to get their views on a draft parking layout, which includes a Disability Parking Bay, writes Brian Byrne.

The proposed layout includes a marked parallel parking space outside the Powder Room.

Some pavement improvements are also set from River Cafe to the Market Square area, which inter alia would stop traffic sweeping into the square area at high speed.

Cllr Sorcha O'Neill is also meeting with the town engineer to discuss costings for traffic calming options for Kilcullen, using LPT funds for 2018.

The proposals follow Cllr O'Neill raising the matters at the Naas MD of Kildare County Council.

Draft parking layouts to be shown to councillors

November 22, 2017 0 Comments
The matter of parking regulation across from the Kilcullen Heritage Centre is the subject of a report which is to be furnished to councillors in the Naas Municipal District, writes Brian Byrne.

Councillors were told at the latest meeting that the Parking Enforcement Officer is examining the matter, and that a review of the area is currently 'being finalised'.

A draft drawing of the proposals will be made available to the councillors at the November meeting of the MD.

At the same meeting they will be given a draft drawing for a wheelchair-friendly parking space currently under consideration for Bishop Rogan Park.
